Dear parents and students,
I hope you had a relaxing and enjoyable summer. We welcome all the new students and parents to our Aikido family here in Victoria, BC. I hope that you are settling in well to the classes and the nature of Aikido practice, which may feel different to what you may be familiar with with other martial arts.
As we approach the Autumn Solstice on Friday, 22nd September, I would like to thank you all for signing up and attending these first three weeks of classes. Reflecting on the present schedule, I realised that it is similar to the schedule almost exactly a year ago due to my son's wedding. Unlike last year, this year we were able to begin Aikido classes together with the school year before taking a three-week break, from September 25 to October 13, for us to travel to Japan for my daughter's wedding! (We are still reeling from the fact that both our children are married.) Aikido classes will resume on Tuesday, October 17.
For our newer students, do feel free to connect with me if you have any questions about Aikido practice or the techniques. When you progress and improve, practice gets easier and more fun; and the confusion will be reduced. Familiarise yourselves with the basic movements of "tenkan" (turning away) and "irimi" (turning into/entering), and the basic techniques, "ikkyo" and "irimi nage". When you are confident with your footwork and hand positions, the techniques will come easier. Do browse and explore the Glossary on the website Ueshiba Aikido Victoria, Canada.
